Natasha Fortson creates a space of intimacy and introspection through a performance that urges its spectators to ponder the emotions that emerge when facing oneself - stripped, honest, raw, and unfiltered. Using live elements and an intentional juxtaposition of disturbing and enchanting symbolism, Fortson takes inspiration from magical realism and her cultural roots to portray the duality and complexity of an individual. Volcanic eruptions can be catastrophic and destructive, burning and engulfing everything in its path. With time though, that same material becomes fertilized and feeds the creation of new life, of new ecosystems. Like a volcanic eruption, we often fear change for its ability to disrupt our current reality. We cling to comfort and stability, but yearn for growth and transformation. This project acts as an altar to come back to all of the catastrophes that have fertilized us. In this process, I’ve extended my curiosity about these cycles to loved ones in my surroundings. studying the transitions from Mesoamerican life to current ways of being in Latin America - specifically in Mexico.&nbsp; I was interested to see how the baroque era used tactics of beauty, art, and celebrating creativity to create a hierarchal system and manage to convince and colonize with its supposed truth-spreading. Turning everything into an art object made it easy to solidify the power and “holiness” of the Spanish kingdom as well as the existence of God to people who already had an established system of beliefs (and distract from the violence happening in the process). Using the same tactics of creating a new reality out of individual belief, I reimagine hierarchies in reference to our relationship with nature. In my research, first, I let nature take its course and then decide what I want to do with it. Using a mixture of mediums, processes, experiments, and textures, I create symbols sourced from studies of nature to create a reality of supreme power. The power to heal, to grow, to expand, to die, to be reborn are all divine parts of nature that could be replicated in our own lives to reach a place of freedom.&nbsp; Explorations Plaster Tiles, generational inheritance that my grandparents and ancestors were able to pass down; and a personal examination of how my life experiences can be celebrated, healed, and connected to my family line. The questions arise : why are certain experiences, talents, traits, traumas, granted the access to live past one life? Do we have agency in what we pass down? Is there any agency in what we inherit? I question whether there is a way to calculate the effects of experiences to measure how or why they impregnate into the DNA of generations to follow. Naturally, I contemplate which aspects of my reality will be passed down, and whether or not I have the capability to heal certain traumas in order to resist their imprint. In an act of radical vulnerability, I dove into several bodies of work that have forced me to reckon with my past, face myself, practice deep gratitude.
