Mujer Volcanica

Self Portrait

A sculpture.

An exploration, an interview, a conversation.

An observation, an act of remembrance, a letting go.

To give space, to burn, to fertalize, to invite evolution.

Volcanic Altars
A work in progress

A sculptural series that represents the constant cycles of life and death we experience in life - in ourselves, in our emotions, relationships, environments, patterns, careers, in losing loved ones and welcoming new life into the world.

Volcanic eruptions can be catastrophic and destructive, burning and engulfing everything in its path. With time though, that same material becomes fertilized and feeds the creation of new life, of new ecosystems. Like a volcanic eruption, we often fear change for its ability to disrupt our current reality. We cling to comfort and stability, but yearn for growth and transformation. This project acts as an altar to come back to all of the catastrophes that have fertilized us.

In this process, I’ve extended my curiosity about these cycles to loved ones in my surroundings. Through processes of casting torsos, I’ve been creating space for vulnerable moments, conversations, and suspending our experiences in mixtures of plaster and tangible memorabilia.

Renacer
The sculpture that birthed Mujer Volcanica, which then planted seeds for Volcanic Altars. Exhibited in Raíces at Compére Collective June 2022

As a ritual for letting go and calling in expansion, I Iaid my own body in a bed of salts, collected and dried flowers, and soil. “Renacer” meaning rebirth, stood as a symbol for all of the transformations I had undergone, laying my old self to rest and welcoming in the new.
